Position Summary

This posting is for Catawba Nuclear Station (CNS) Mechanical/Civil Design Manager reporting to the CDE CNS Design Engineering Director.

Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy’s six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.

The Catawba Nuclear Station Corporate Design Engineering Manager for Mechanical/Civil are responsible for management of the assigned capital engineering change (EC) portfolio at the Catawba Nuclear Station, and coordinates with other CDE managers/staff to ensure that high quality design solutions are delivered to meet station needs and milestone requirements.  This position is based at Catawba Nuclear Station in York, SC.

This position requires collaboration with stakeholders including senior management members at the assigned sites and across the nuclear fleet.  The incumbent will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to manage a diverse team of nuclear professionals by providing oversight for complex technical tasks including design development, analysis, testing, and field implementation.  Key candidate attributes include a strong commitment to continuous learning and excellence in work standards adherence.

Basic/Required Qualifications

BS in Engineering from an ABET accredited university.

7 years of professional level experience in nuclear services, nuclear plant operations, or nuclear engineering.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in civil, Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering. 

Work experience with t, mechanical systems and equipment and civil design

Experience as a System/Component Engineer or Design Engineer

Registered Professional Engineer

SRO License (active or inactive) or SRO Certification

Responsibilities

Manages a staff of degreed engineers and other professional technical personnel which perform various engineering activities.

Coordinates with their respective working group (Mechanical Working Group) to achieve fleet and team level resource planning to meet project schedules and milestones across the fleet with quality.

Ensures use of technical conscience principles and technical rigor during development of engineering products and recommendations that are commensurate with the safety significance.

Provides engineering expertise to recognize and resolve complex engineering/technical problems to ensure safe, reliable and efficient station operations/power generation.

Expands the team for dealing with complex problems beyond the scope of owner-organization expertise.

Ensures adherence to technical and administrative procedures as well as safe work practices and policies applicable to nuclear generation.

Ensures capable individuals are assigned to perform the role of a Design Engineer and appropriate training is provided to ensure knowledge and skills are achieved and maintained.

Represents CNS Engineering as the duty manager on a rotational basis.

Fulfills an Emergency Response Organization (ERO) role.

Fulfills an outage leadership role.

Performs observations and provides coaching as necessary to improve performance.

Identifies gaps in department and worker performance and develops solutions to close the gaps to improve performance.

Identifies opportunities to leverage innovation and work elimination to improve efficiency and champions the implementation of those opportunities.   

Collaborates with other departments to support work management, outage management, and equipment reliability initiatives.

Works with employees to create Individual Development Plans (IDPs) to support their career progression and improve performance.

Documents quarterly ongoing conversations with each direct report to ensure adequate progress toward goals and development plans.

Participates in ENG training forums/processes to ensure adequate line ownership of training.

Motivates team to display leadership and team effectiveness attributes that are foundational to excellent organizational effectiveness.

Specific Requirements

Ability to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.

Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.

This position may is required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.

Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions

Onsite work, typically in an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
