The Optical Sensing Product Design team is seeking a mechanical engineer to build great experiences and bring Apple products to life. We develop sensors that change the way people interact with their technology. You will help a diverse team of skilled engineers and play a key role in specifying, developing, characterizing, and validating the mechanical design of optical sensing systems. At the end of the extraordinary team effort, your work will be in the hands of millions of people making a difference in their daily lives.

Description

You will lead the end-to-end design, development, and validation of spectral sensing technology into Apple’s portfolio of products. In this role, you will work collaboratively with a talented multifunctional team to generate and validate design concepts, and as the mechanical specialist you will be responsible for:

-Engineering analysis and documentation for your piece of the project.

-Identifying design tradeoffs and risks to choose viable paths forward that lead to a great customer experience.

-Applying good experiment design and the scientific method to reduce design risk early.

-Running tolerance studies to ensure designs are feasible over manufacturing tolerances.

-Driving processes to meet Apple’s high cosmetic standards.

-Crafting clear engineering documentation.

-Supporting external manufacturing vendors with process development and root cause analysis for issues found during testing, including international travel between 15% and 25%.

Responsibilities

Oversee complete module design and system integration

Scope new sensor technologies and proof-of-concept opportunities

Define module, system, and feature-level specs

Perform failure mode analysis and root cause diagnosis

Business travel to support production development

Minimum Qualifications

Hands-on Mechanical Design experience.

3D CAD experience (NX preferred).

Application of statistical tools and techniques.

Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with diverse team members and external vendors to define and achieve project goals.

Minimum requirement of a bachelor's degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Hands-on experience designing for a production environment.

High volume, consumer electronics, or sensing experience is a plus.

Familiarity with GD&T and tolerance analyses.

Experience with optical module design and packaging.

Familiarity with FEA techniques and software packages.

BS in mechanical engineering or related field.

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $126,800 and $190,900, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
