Orbital Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Civil Engineer II to support our Natural Gas group in Hammond, IN. The Civil Engineer II role is responsible for performing engineering functions such as providing technical support to construction projects, and applying engineering expertise to the design, drafting, and development of projects in various civil related industries. This position focuses on developing foundational engineering skills, supporting project teams, and ensuring compliance with industry and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities:

 Engineering and Design Support:

Perform engineering functions, including investigations, evaluations, calculations, and specifications, for design projects.

Assist in the development of engineering drawings, designs, and documentation under the supervision of senior engineers.

Apply standard engineering techniques and procedures to assignments requiring independent judgment.

Technical Support for Construction Operations:

Assist in the preparation of technical designs, calculations, and specifications for construction projects.

Conduct field verifications to ensure compliance with design plans and regulatory requirements.

Provide on-site engineering support during critical construction activities, such as pipeline tie-ins, pressure testing, and purging operations.

Field Oversight and Problem Solving:

Monitor construction activities to ensure adherence to design specifications, safety standards, and environmental regulations.

Collaborate with contractors, inspectors, and field crews to address and resolve on-site technical issues.

Support construction teams in interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, and other technical documentation.

Compliance and Quality Assurance:

Support the preparation of designs that meet regulatory, safety, and quality standards.

Review and verify the accuracy of engineering calculations and design drawings.

Ensure all construction activities comply with applicable codes and standards.

Participate in quality assurance activities, including material inspections, as-built validations, and field audits.

Documentation and Reporting:

Maintain detailed records of field activities, including daily logs, inspection reports, and material usage documentation.

Assist in updating as-built drawings and ensuring timely submission of project documentation.

Prepare progress reports for project managers and stakeholders.

Collaboration and Communication:

Work closely with project managers, construction coordinators, and contractors to align project objectives with operational goals.

Communicate effectively with stakeholders to ensure alignment on technical requirements and project timelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or a related technical discipline required.

3+ years of experience in engineering or construction operations, preferably in utility or infrastructure projects.

Basic knowledge of engineering principles, construction practices, and safety regulations.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and engineering design software, such as AutoCAD or Civil 3D.

This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

EIT (Engineer in Training) or FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) certification preferred.

Familiarity with natural gas utility construction practices and regulatory standards.

Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.

Level of Experience (Typical):

Entry-level professional role designed for individuals with 3-5 years of experience.

Exposure to utility or natural gas operations is beneficial but not required.
