Siemens and Aachen University negotiate research cooperation agreement - Aim is to develop a completely new generation of rail vehicles.

Siemens and the RWTH Aachen University are now working together to develop the train of the future. The aptly named "Future Train" project will conceive, research and lay the foundations for the rail vehicles of tomorrow.

Both project partners are hoping to cooperate on a long-term basis to increase the competitiveness of trains compared to other means of transport. The first stage of collaboration will see the definition and coordination of individual development schemes, and from 2017, these schemes are set to become reality. The focus will be on new technologies, innovative materials, development methods and manufacturing processes.

Further key aspects include the development of multimodal mobility concepts for the holistic integration of rail and individual transport. "The Future Train project provides us with the opportunity to use innovative approaches for the development of a completely new generation of rail vehicles," says Dr. Jochen Eickholt, CEO of Siemens Mobility Division.

In order to meet this objective and make the "Future Train" a reality, the developers and researchers have been grouped into various design teams, each headed by a tandem of one Siemens and one RWTH Aachen University employee.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Guenther Schuh, Head of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at RWTH Aachen University is enthusiastic about the project: "Like hardly any other product, a rail vehicle provides us with the opportunity to fully realize the potential of our innovative research solutions.

At RWTH Aachen University, we back the ideas behind the Future Train project and are looking forward to cooperating with Siemens on it."
