The Alberta Motor Association (AMA), IBI Group, and GreenOwl Mobile today announced a big leap forward in keeping Alberta drivers safe and aware of traffic issues with the delivery of an enhanced AMA Road Reporter app.

This next-generation connected mobile driver experience adds shared real-time road condition and traffic information to the already useful road condition data available.

The AMA Road Reporter app is now available to both Android and Apple device users. The app is free and can be used to receive and share immediate, real-time road condition and traffic information for Alberta’s 31,000 km of major roadways, in addition to information – such as highway camera feeds and weather – that people are used to getting from AMA Road Reports.

Powered by social and mobile technologies, people can access real-time updates for road conditions, traffic, drive times, delays, and incidents along their routes. By driving while the app is on, drivers contribute valuable information about traffic conditions, which helps other drivers make better decisions about the route they choose.

“The AMA Road Reporter app gives all Albertans the ability to hear real-time information without distractions,” said Collin Moody, AMA’s Chief Information Officer. “We noticed that about 60% of people visiting our AMA Road Reports website were using a mobile device. We are committed to improving road safety, so while it’s important to give people the information they need to make good driving decisions before they get in the car, we wanted to pay attention to mobile use trends and build a much safer mobile app people could use along their route.”

“Working with GreenOwl and IBI Group, I’m proud that we’ve developed a world-class tool that helps keep drivers’ eyes on the road, while our ears are to the ground,” he added. “It’s also an incredible way to engage with people driving all over Alberta and enlist their help recording traffic delays in real-time without drivers having to do anything other than have the app on.”

“IBI Group is delighted to have worked alongside such an innovative group of companies to bring this convergence of technology to drivers in Alberta,” said Bruno Peters, Deputy Regional Director, IBI Group, Canada West. “This is a prime example of intelligent transportation technologies contributing to a safer and more efficient driving experience as we look to smart city technologies to help us get more from our highway infrastructure. This is one of the many innovations IBI Group has integrated into our suite of transportation system products as IBI continues to define the cities of tomorrow.”

“GreenOwl continues to build and expand our service offering with partners like AMA and IBI Group,” said Matt Man, CEO of GreenOwl Mobile. “This innovation elevates our product offering and most importantly aligns with our vision to connect drivers on one platform. AMA’s Road reporter equips drivers with relevant, real and audio alerts helping to ensure a safer trip. Additionally, we are delighted our product resonates with AMA’s brand.”
