The Brooks Building at the Birley Fields campus in Manchester was Highly Commended in the Sustainable Project of the Year category at last night’s Construction News Awards, the judges hailing a project which they said “demonstrated outstanding sustainable innovation throughout”.

The judges’ citation went on to say: “The client’s strong sustainability vision was delivered successfully by the Sir Robert McAlpine project team, with a particularly impressive water conservation and management system."

“The team also showed evidence of extensive community engagement, going above and beyond normal levels of commitment." This BREEAM Excellent-rated building saw 99% of construction waste diverted from landfill, with 43% of the subcontract value awarded to firms located in Greater Manchester against a target of 10%.

“An impressive project carried out by an excellent team.”

Manchester Metropolitan University’s Birley campus is home to the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care and the Faculty of Education.

The academic building provides a new learning and teaching environment for more than 6,000 students with facilities including lecture theatres, specialist teaching accommodation and social learning areas. The development can also accommodate around 500 academics, researchers and technical staff.
