ASPECT Studios is currently undertaking the public domain design for the 12km Sydney Light Rail for ALTRAC Light Rail.

The Sydney Light Rail will completely transform the public streets and spaces of Sydney’s CBD, and will include the partial pedestrianisation of Sydney’s iconic George Street. ALTRAC Light Rail partnership provided the NSW State government a solution which removes overhead wire lines from key city streets, to reduce congestion and provide a more urbane, integrated and enjoyable transport experience.

The travel experience will be improved by design which responds to local context with public domain material changing subtly throughout the route in response to the five precincts the light rail passes through – from Circular Quay, and George St pedestrian zone to Surry Hills, Moore Park, Kensington, Kingsford and Randwick. Each stop will provide intuitive, integrated wayfinding as a modular line-wide family of elements. This also extends to working closely with vehicle designers to achieve an integrated approach to materials, colours and arrangement of elements.

‘‘City shaping’ is ASPECT Studio’s niche and to be invited to contribute to the long planned sustainable transport vision which will transform the public realm of Australia’s busiest city is an honour’ – says Sacha Coles, Director, ASPECT Studios.
