Construction work is due to start on a new Broadway Malyan-designed office building for HSBC in the heart of Dubai’s premier business district for developer GRDI.

The 20-story development in Downtown Dubai is the practice’s second major project with the bank having previously designed the interiors of its Singapore headquarters. The 30,000 sqm development will have 16 floors of office space over a four levels above-grade car park with the project set to be complete in 2017 before HSBC assume occupancy in 2018.

The project is a collaboration between the Abu Dhabi and Lisbon studios and includes all design aspects of the building including front of house interiors. Lisbon-based director David Whitehead, said the design of the building was influenced by its function as well as the ethos of the client.

He said: “As a financial institution it was important that the design had a rigour and honesty and its glass construction represents a visual openness and transparency while the expressed structure anchors the building to the ground emphasize the sense of stability.

“HSBC is a truly global company and we wanted the design to symbolise connectivity by introducing a vertical fritting pattern on the exterior of the building which represents metaphorical communication lines extending outwards from a central core.”

The project is part of a property consolidation programme by HSBC in Dubai that will see it reduce its portfolio from four to two buildings while expanding its overall floor space from around to 33,000 sqm to 37,000 sqm. Abdulfattah Sharaf, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC in the UAE, added: “This signature development reflects the UAE’s status as the Middle East’s leading financial capital and the scale of HSBC’s ambitions in the region
