Populous-designed Arena das Dunas hosts four World Cup matches in 2014, with the final one on Tuesday, June 24, between Italy and Uruguay.

Fans of competing nations Mexico, Cameroon, the USA and Ghana have already experienced football in this world class stadium. The arena was finished on time and under budget, and boasts a number of sustainable design features including maximizing natural ventilation by funnelling in coastal breezes and collecting rainwater to irrigate the playing field.

The stadium’s unique design, featuring an iconic, petal-shaped canopy, “comes from the seaside city’s topography of gently flowing dunes,” designer Chris Lee explained to the Kansas City Business Journal. This is one of six World Cup stadiums Populous has designed in its thirty year history, more than any other firm. These include Soccer City, for the 2010 World Cup, and four stadiums for the 2018 World Cup in Russia in the cities of Kazan, Saransk, Rostov-on-Don and Sochi.
